Big Liza

Over the summer of 2016 I had the joy of working with Liza Wemakor, a spoken word poet at Dartmouth College. I had heard Liza's poetry before and knew I wanted to work with her on a piece. Liza and I spent a lot of time talking about everything, from her poetry to her childhood. We started work on two other concepts but when she shared her poem "Fine Tailor" something clicked and we both knew this was what we wanted to focus on. This 10-foot ballpoint pen drawing is my largest piece up-to-date and is my first collaborative work.  I took Liza's words and experiences and interpreted them into what I hope is a visually arresting image. The accompanying video is meant to give my subject a voice.

The best part of working on "Big Liza" (as I affectionately started calling the piece) was getting to know the amazing human being it represents. Liza, you are beautiful and talented and thank you for sharing your words with me.
