Larger than Life
2019 - 2020
Growing up in Sri Lanka I always stuck out in public spaces. Not just because I was Black and people tend to stare quite at those who look different, but also because I was a girl. I know so many women can speak to what it’s like being catcalled, harassed, followed and over-sexualized to the point where you aren’t allowed to feel comfortable in your own skin. In these pieces I try to reclaim the streets of my hometown as my own. While I might not always feel comfortable in these spaces, the characters I draw can. They stand out, are Black and Asian and are confident in the space they occupy. Bold and themselves, they look directly at you, daring you to stare back.
