A Field of Lost Hair Ties
Once upon a world much different than this one, a Black woman walked into a CVS and bought a pack of one hundred, no-damage, elastic hair ties.
The hair ties sat on her dresser in wobbly little piles. At first, she was careful, wearing one for weeks till it grew slack or snapped. But soon she came to feel safe, trusting that those one hundred hair ties would last her forever. She would grab handfuls when she went to the gym, drop them mindlessly around her house and suck them up when she vacuumed. When she lost one, she just grabbed another. The piles grew smaller and smaller, until one day, they were all gone. She was too far out from wash day to let it be, so she ran to CVS to pick up some more.
Only there was nothing left. No hair ties, no CVS, no anything.
Just a world on fire.
And a pile of ash, where all the one hundred, no-damage, elastic hair ties had been.
